Nonesuch Journal: Essay on Collaborating with Deborah Johnson/CandyStations

Phénakistoscopes, Carl Sagan, and Skittles: Sarah wrote some words for Nonesuch Records Journal about the process of collaborating with video designer Deborah Johnson of CandyStations on ‘Mass for the Endangered.’ Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at their process of developing the visual world for the Mass, out 9.25 on Nonesuch + New Amsterdam Records. The Mass, with a libretto by poet/writer Nathaniel Bellows and a performance by the English vocal ensemble Gallicantus led by Gabriel Crouch, is a celebration of, and an elegy for, the natural world—animals, plants, insects, the planet itself—an appeal for greater awareness, urgency, and action. The first video in their six-video collaboration, for Sanctus/Benedictus, is available to watch here.
