The great Bernard of Clairveaux
knows something of this love.
Malachy of Armagh was his name.
An unbearable likeness, a recognition
became a storied love.
Philia, eros, agape.
Over a decade,
“a twofound treasure,” they called them.
“A single star of surpassing brightness.”
Malachy died in the arms of Bernard,
and was buried in his habit.
And Bernard has worn
Malachy’s to this day.
Philia, eros, agape:
Love knows no vessels,
only souls.
Bernard, the sage mentor of the Pope,
famously loved a man.
And do you know what they call him?
“The conscience of all Europe.”
